Zion National Park is a dream destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone who appreciates awe-inspiring landscapes. Whether you're hiking through its majestic canyons, marveling at the sandstone cliffs, or simply soaking in the serenity, Zion offers something for everyone. Here's a day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit, featuring breathtaking hikes, delicious food, and a perfect sunset experience.
Where to Stay: The Lodge at Zion - Country Marriott
If you're planning to stay overnight, I highly recommend The Lodge at Zion - Country Marriott. This hotel offers stunning views of the Zion landscape and features newly updated rooms that blend modern comfort with the area's natural charm. After a day of hiking, you can unwind in the fantastic pool area, complete with lounge chairs for relaxation. The staff is incredibly welcoming, and the overall experience feels luxurious while perfectly complementing the beauty of the park.
8:00 AM
Arrive Early for Parking (or Take a Shuttle from Springdale)
To fully enjoy your day at Zion, plan to arrive early—especially if you want to secure parking. During peak seasons, parking spots fill up fast. Parking is free and located at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center. If you’re staying in Springdale, you can also take one of the convenient shuttle buses into the park. Admission is required, so be prepared to pay the entrance fee. If you’re a frequent traveler to U.S. National Parks, consider purchasing the annual park pass—an excellent investment that grants you access to all U.S. National Parks for a full year.
8:30 AM
Morning Hike: Temple of Sinawava (Shuttle Stop #9)
Start your morning with a hike to the Temple of Sinawava, an easy trail that offers impressive views along the North Fork Virgin River. After a night of heavy rain, the trail may be wet, so unless you’re prepared to get your feet soaked, you might only want to hike part of the way. If you're feeling adventurous and want to hike further in, waterproof boots or a change of shoes and socks are a must.
This first mile of the trail is accessible for all skill levels and provides a stunning introduction to the beauty of Zion. The towering cliffs and peaceful river make it a perfect spot for nature photography and quiet contemplation.
10:00 AM
Mid-Morning Hike: Emerald Pools Trail (Shuttle Stop #5)
Next, head over to the Emerald Pools Trail, another beautiful and moderate hike. We opted to visit the Lower Emerald Pools, which featured an incredible waterfall you can actually walk beneath—an exhilarating experience, especially on a hot day.
For those seeking a greater challenge, the entrance to this trail also serves as the starting point for the renowned Angels Landing hike, which requires a permit and is only recommended for experienced hikers due to its steep cliffs and dizzying heights. If you're up for an adventure but don't have a permit, consider hiking up to Scout's Lookout, which still offers jaw-dropping views and a good challenge.
12:30 PM
Lunch: Jack's Sports Grill (Springdale)
After a morning of exploring, it's time to refuel. Head to Jack's Sports Grill in Springdale for a hearty lunch. The pulled pork sandwich is a must-try—tender, flavorful, and just the right amount of smoky goodness. If you're in the mood for something lighter, the salads and wraps are also popular choices. The casual and friendly vibe makes it a great spot to relax and recharge before your next adventure.
2:00 PM
Afternoon: Poolside Relaxation
By early afternoon, you'll probably be ready for some relaxation. Head back to your hotel and spend a few hours lounging by the pool at The Lodge at Zion Marriott. The pool area is surrounded by breathtaking views of the Zion landscape, making it the perfect place to unwind after your morning hikes. Grab a book or simply enjoy the scenery as you soak in the sun.
6:00 PM
Sunset Adventure: Horseback Riding at Zion Mountain Ranch
As the day winds down, prepare for a truly memorable experience—a sunset horseback ride at Zion Mountain Ranch. Riding up and through the Zion mountains as the sun dips below the horizon is absolutely magical. The hues of red and orange cast on the cliffs and canyons create an unforgettable backdrop. Whether you're an experienced rider or a beginner, this is an incredible way to see Zion's beauty from a different perspective.
The drive to Zion Mountain Ranch from Springdale adds to the adventure, taking you through the Mount Carmel Tunnel, a remarkable engineering feat. This tunnel, just over 1 mile long, was built starting in the 1920s and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding cliffs and rock formations as you approach the ranch. It's the perfect lead-up to a one-of-a-kind evening.
9:00 PM
Dinner: Bit & Spur (Springdale)
End your perfect day with dinner at Bit & Spur, a popular spot offering large portions of Southwest-inspired dishes. The menu has something for everyone, from tacos and enchiladas to more substantial fare like steaks and burgers. Don’t miss out on the sangria—it’s the perfect accompaniment to a hearty meal after a day full of adventure.
